Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS) is a prestigious and competitive annual competition for high school students in the United States. It was established in 1942 by the Society for Science, with the aim of identifying and supporting the next generation of scientific leaders in the country. The competition provides an opportunity for students to showcase their research, innovation, and problem-solving skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. In this report, we will discuss the history of Regeneron STS, how to prepare for it, the structure of the competition, awards, and categories.
History: Regeneron STS was previously known as the Intel Science Talent Search, which was sponsored by the Intel Corporation from 1998 to 2016. In 2017, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals became the title sponsor of the competition. Throughout its history, the competition has produced numerous winners who have gone on to make significant contributions to the scientific community. Notable alumni include physicist and Nobel laureate Sheldon Glashow and computer scientist and internet pioneer Vint Cerf.
Preparation: To participate in Regeneron STS, high school students need to conduct an original research project in a STEM field. Students can choose to work on their projects independently or under the guidance of a mentor. The competition is open to all high school students in the United States, as well as American citizens studying abroad. The application process involves submitting a research paper, essays, transcripts, and test scores.
Structure: The competition begins with an online application, which is due in November. In January, the top 300 applicants are selected as semifinalists and are asked to submit a more detailed research paper. In February, 40 finalists are chosen to attend the Regeneron STS finals week in Washington D.C., where they will participate in a series of interviews, presentations, and group activities. The finalists will also have the opportunity to meet with leading scientists and policymakers. The winners are announced at a gala awards ceremony at the end of the week.
Awards and Categories: Regeneron STS offers more than $3 million in awards each year, with the top prize being $250,000. In addition to the top prize, there are numerous other awards and categories, including:
